A Community Comes of Age

This year five former graduates of the Villa Nueva School near Pailón, Bolivia are a part of the teaching team continuing the task of training future leaders. A Librarian, an English teacher, a Music instructor, a Plautdietsch (Low German) teacher, and a Kindergarten teacher (see picture above) join nearly twenty other instructors and administrators on the staff of this government-recognized educational institution.

Over one hundred and eighty students attend day-time classes and nearly two dozen adults are enrolled in night classes.

This in an area that only a few years ago had no school connected to their Mennonite background for them to go to that offered Diplomas recognized by the Bolivian Government.

From a humble start in an old rented building in Pailón to today’s well-equipped classrooms and labs in the community of Villa Nueva this school offers educational opportunities taught from a Christian perspective. Several other schools in surrounding communities, including one in the new community of Hacienda Verde near San Jose de Chiquitos, provide a growing family of schools for children from the Low German Mennonite Colonies.

Ministries in the Villa Nueva and Hacienda Verde communities are part of the MEM (Misión Evangélica Menonita) mission work. MEM is a partnership of the Evangelical Bergthaler Mennonite Conference, and Evangelical Mennonite Mission Conference, and other associated partners including the Evangelical Mennonite Conference.
